The risk may be remote, but many shelters and rescue groups halt the adoptions of black cats around Halloween, and increase their screening process. Because of the historical connections of black cats to bad luck, “witches” and rituals, black cats are at risk of being picked up for simple party props or even ritual sacrifice and torture.
Black cat owners should keep their pets inside during the holiday. The increase in seasonal adoption bans have increased at many shelters, because of irresponsible pet owners. Along with black cat bans, there’s the once-common bans on bunny adoptions around Easter and puppy adoptions as Christmas gifts.
